Memorable Kruger Safari
We booked a 5-day Kruger safari and stayed at the Radisson Safari Hotel. Ruben our MoAfrika contact was very helpful with our booking and ensuring a smooth reservation process. However we did have to follow him up to let us know when our balance payment was due. The hotel was luxurious, had a comfortable superior room, served good food at the Mirage restaurant and had friendly and helpful staff. Special mention here for Portia, our server at Mirage. Her cheerfulness and pleasant demeanor made us want to always sit in the area she was assigned to. The only downside to this hotel: slippers and bathrobes were not complimentary in the superior rooms. Front desk told us these were available only in the premium rooms.
Day 1 had us on a Sunset Drive in a private game reserve. Our tracker Gift and guide Terrence pulled all the stops in getting us to spot a lot of wildlife like impala, zebra, giraffe and 2 of the Big 5: elephant and lion which was just a few meters away from our vehicle! Terrence would run over dead trees and bushes to make our own road as Gift pointed out the way where certain animals were spotted.
On Day 2 we did our Kruger Game Drive. Note that Radisson is about an hour away from the Kruger gate that we used. So leaving the hotel at 5:30 am in 11°C weather, speeding down the highway at 80 kph in an open top vehicle was freezing cold! The ponchos provided by our guide Lambs did little to keep us warm. But shortly after the sun rose as we entered the national park, we spotted a group of cheetahs - a few adults and some cubs. It was an exhilarating start to the safari. Lambs was as informative as he was funny in describing the wildlife and explaining their behavior patterns. He was so determined to find us the elusive leopard and rhino but it wasnt meant to be. Instead we got to see the Cape Buffalo, the 3rd of the Big 5. Aside from this animal, we saw hippos, gnu, zebra, ostrich, wildebeest, and many more wild animals roaming free all around us, some like the giraffes and elephants were just on the side of the road. We even saw a herd of elephants cross the road just as we were passing through. Seeing 3 out of the Big 5 and all the other magnificent creatures made this Game Drive a superb experience. Also worth noting: unlike the Sunset Drive on D1 where the guide and tracker would drive the jeep into dense bushes and undergrowth, the guide in Kruger was allowed to use only the paved and gravel roads. He isn't allowed to drive into the brush if looking for wildlife to spot. Also, Kruger is a very safe place. We could leave our bags and jackets in the jeep while having lunch, and when we came back, everything was where we left them.
The Panorama Route on D3 took us to some very breathtaking sights. The Blydes Canyon, God's Window, Potholes, etc were all awesome places to see. It was so hard to capture the natural beauty of the landscape in photographs. Our guide was Gustaf, a very competent and safe driver. We just wish he could provide more information about the places we were seeing such as origins of the names and other significant info about the places. But in fairness to him, he would provide as much info as he could when we had questions.
Day 4 and 5 were spent at the hotel, going for an energizing workout session at the well-appointed gym, and taking a relaxing treatment at the spa.
All in all, this was an unforgettable trip, with a few areas for improvement, but the good things far outweighed the bad. Shout out to Life, our van driver who picked us up and brought us back to the airport. Starting and ending with him gave us a nice overview of Kruger and an apt way to fill in the blanks for more info that we may had missed during our stay.
